Analyse Incident Frequency Rates – Calculation Methodology

It is useful to ensure that you have a good understanding of how Activ calculates Incident Frequency Rates before you begin to make use of the Incident Log module’s Frequency Rates area. This will help you to gain a better understanding of the contents of the resulting reports, and of what these reports mean in practice. To this end, the following article provides an explanation of how Activ calculates:

Worked examples are provided in both instances, using a reporting start date of April 2019.

Note that Activ requires twelve months’ worth of data to calculate any given month’s RAFR or RIR statistic (i.e. data from that month and the eleven preceding months). In addition, because this data is presented in a twelve-monthly line graph, your system will need to contain 23 months’ worth of Incidents to provide you with a truly meaningful report. This is because the earliest point displayed in the graph must itself be calculated using data from eleven months earlier. In other words, to produce a complete RAFR or RIR report for April 2019, you will need data from the following period:

  • June 2017 – Apr 2019; with
    • May 2018 being the earliest point shown in the report; and
    • Data from June 2017 – May 2018 required to calculate May 2018’s statistic.

Activ will allow you to generate a report for any period that is at least twelve months in the past from the current date, but will give earlier points in the graph a statistic of ‘0’ if your system does not contain enough data to calculate the statistic for that month. You can see this demonstrated within the below example:

Calculation of Reportable Accident Frequency Rates (RAFR)

Activ calculates your company’s monthly RAFR using the following formula:

  • (Total Reportable Accidents logged this month and in previous 11 months X 100,000) ÷ Total number of working hours logged this month and in previous 11 months.

For example, April 2019’s RAFR statistic would be calculated as follows:

Calculation of Recorded Injury Rates (RIR)

Activ calculates your company’s monthly RIR using the following formula:

  • (Total Injuries and illnesses logged this month and in previous 11 months X 100,000) ÷ Total number of working hours logged this month and in previous 11 months.

For example, April 2019’s RIR statistic would be calculated as follows:
